As a general guide, CocoMutts recommends feeding up to a maximum of 1 teaspoon of virgin coconut oil per day for every 10kgs of your dogs body weight (upto a maximum of 3 teaspoons per day for dogs 30kgs+) however larger dogs will still benefit from eating less than this. For dogs that require more than 1 teaspoon per day you should split the amount and feed only 1 teaspoon at a time, ie: 1 in the morning and 1 at night.
It’s important to build up to the recommended amount gradually over several days. We recommend feeding around 1 quarter of the required amount for the first 2-3 days and then gradually increasing the amount over the next 5 days or so.
All dogs are individuals, and will react differently to changes and introductions to their diet. Over feeding coconut oil or increasing the amount too quickly can cause your dog to have oily stools. If you notice this, stop feeding for a day or two and then start with a smaller amount and build up over a longer period.
The recommended amount should be used as a guide only. As all dogs are different you’ll need to find the right balance for your dog. This depends on the size of the dog and if there is a particular problem that you’re trying to treat. For general health and well being where there is no problem to treat you can feed less and still receive the same benefits for skin, coat and digestion. A smaller amount should be fed to dogs that could be considered overweight and should be fed in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise. With the correct balance of coconut oil, food and exercise it could even help an overweight dog to lose weight and become more active.
As a completely natural product there are no strict rules or ‘dosage’ like with a medicinal product. As with any supplement it should be given as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle to be most effective.
CocoMutts is completely suitable for human use and is produced to the same standards that any other coconut oil intended for human consumption is. You can use it as a supplement, for cooking or skincare yourself, but please save some for the dogs.
